“What’s Age Got to Do With It?
Feb 1st, 2009 by Lucille
I like Robin McGraw, I really do. She seems to have the perfect blend of “stand by your man” persona, mixed with a little bit of “I can hold my own” attitude.
I love knowing that she been in the audience of every episode of the Dr. Phil show. And I don’t mind telling you I love “Dr. Phil.”
When I went to graduate school to study counseling, my professors would all mock me whenever I brought up Dr. Phil. Then one day, one of my professors said, “Hey, I watched him the other day…he’s good.” I gloated saying, “I told you so!”
Not that I agree with getting therapy on TV. But the guy is smart, and he does have good advice.
Now that we have that out of the way, I’d like to give you my thoughts on Robin’s new book, “What’s Age Got to Do With It?”
Overall, the book is an easy read. Light, informative, and engaging. Robin covers nine aspects of her life: age, fitness, nutrition, skin, hormones, hair, makeup, fashion and faith.
I like how authentic Robin is, and the down-home voice she uses. She’s like a girlfriend welcoming you into her home, inviting you to watch and do what she does:
“Here hon, try this moisturizer. And honey while you’re at it, get rid of that sugar! And SO&SO makes the best pair of jeans for the money.”
That last sentence is mine, not hers, but it gives you a taste for how the book reads.
Overall, I would rate the book, “good, not excellent.” For one thing, most people aren’t going to be able to afford those designer cosmetics or fashions. Granted, Robin does offer homemade facial concoctions, but I felt much of the book’s products really weren’t practical for the average reader.
The book’s value for me came in her discussion of hormone replacement therapy for peri-menopausal women. No, I’m not there yet, but it won’t be long. While I might not agree with everything she had to say, I appreciate the fact that she is bringing this topic up for discussion.
As a counselor, I also love the message Robin gives to women: You are worth it! Stop filling everyone else’s cup and neglecting your own. You want to be a better wife, mother, daughter, friend? Then take care of yourself! Watch a 2-minute video - Click Here
