“Then Miriam took a tambourine in her hand…”

“Sit quietly with me, letting all your fears and worries bubble up to the surface of your consciousness. There, in the light of my presence, the bubbles pop and disappear. However, some fears surface over and over again, especially fear of the future. You tend to project yourself mentally into the next day, week, month, year, decade; and you visualize yourself coping badly in those times. What you see is a false image, because it doesn’t include me.”
These are the words I read from my devotional this morning (Jesus Calling by Sarah Young).
I don’t know about you, but I can certainly stir up a pot of worry. Mostly it’s the fear of the unknown that frightens me. Now if ever there was a group of folks facing the unknown, it was the Israelite people who were led by Moses out of Egypt. Even though they were released from Egyptian slavery, they had no idea what the future held.
Packing only what they could load on their backs or carry in their hands, they were reduced to packing only the most essential items. Miraculously God did part the Reed Sea, and they made their way towards the Promised Land.
But did you ever notice this verse: “When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing. Miriam sang to the Lord, ‘Sing to God – what a victory.’”
What! They had packed tambourines?
What an incredible image of the faith they had in God. A visual aid of their trust. Seems they knew they would need to worship….with tambourines!
This story inspired me to buy a little tambourine pendant. A visual aid of the God I serve, and the victories he’s working in my life. I sing to God - he is highly exalted.

Love the imagery of this. I didn’t notice it before in the way you brought it out. I sing the victory song in advance, in preparation, in my today!
Thanks.
