What Are You Focusing On?
Feb 9th, 2008 by Lucille
Yesterday I was at the National Speaker’s Association Colorado Chapter meeting. World-class speaker, Dr. Joahcim de Posada www.askjoachim.com showed us a very interesting video clip. I would ask that you not read the rest of this post until after watching the clip: Pay attention to the players wearing white, and count how many times they pass the ball:

scroll down through this post after watching the clip
Ok, now I’m going to ask you, how many of you saw the black gorilla walk through the scene? Yesterday in a room full of hundreds, only 3 hands went up. Dr. de Posado said that was unusual - typically no hands go up.
Now, apply this to your life. What might you be missing because you are so focused on other things?
Maybe you’re focusing on the negative, while all around you is the opportunity to find something positive. Maybe you’re focused on the pain, or what’s missing in your, life rather than what you do have.
I know I am the first to complain about the bathroom I have to scrub, or the family I need to cook for.
How refreshing it is to deliberately change my focus in order to be thankful that I have a house and that I have a family.
Did you ever become so focused on something negative that you almost missed something wonderful? Tell me!

its so funny you mentioned that video clip because in general psychology the other day we saw that same clip (and several others) that dealt with perception. what we perceive in the world isn’t always what we are seeing. we only see pieces of the actual whole but don’t realize that what we are seeing isn’t the entirety of the whole thing.
perception is such an interesting topic, one that we just began studying in gen psych but it is fascinating how different people perceive different situations and how focused, or not focused, people tend to be….
